Bontnewydd v Llanystumdwy

6.30pm  13 May 2015

Gwynedd League
Bontnewydd 2 Llanystumdwy 1 (att 140)

I thought this game might set up a winners-takes-all title decider on Saturday, but Llanystumdwy's failure to win turned this into the title decider instead, with Llanllyfni confirmed as league champions at the final whistle.

It was never going to be an easy task for the visitors. Bontnewydd had lost only one home game all season, and were challenging for the title themselves for most of the season. This win lifted them to second in the table, a position they'll hold if Llanystumdwy can't beat the champions in their final fixture.

Bontnewydd took an early lead, leaving the visitors chasing the game against a well organised and resolute defence.

Llanystumdwy got on level terms thanks to an own goal in the opening minute of the second period, but parity didn't last long, the home side were back in front just six minutes later and held the lead to the end.

The visitors kept battling to get back into the game, but Bontnewydd were the better side and, if there was going to be another goal, the home side looked the more likely scorers. They came closest to adding a third when they missed a penalty.

Bontnewydd's Cae Stanley ground is good for this level. Inside the entrance is a car park, beyond with the pitch runs widthways and is railed off. Portable buildings in one corner serve as changing rooms and house a tea bar.
