The Saturday Morning League, Plate Group C
Wigton Moor 2 Barugh Green 1 (att 7)
West Yorkshire's Saturday morning league has gone through a number of different identities in the last few years.
What was the Yorkshire Christian League became the West Yorkshire Fair Play League, then last summer it announced it'd become the Yorkshire and District Saturday Morning League.
But apparently, for reasons unknown to me, the FA objected to that name. So instead the league quickly rebranded again to the even more geographically indistinct title of The Saturday Morning Football League.
It's single division league competition is called the Yorkshire Premiership, but this game was in the Plate, one of two cup competitions. The Plate begins with a group stage, and lowly Wigton Moor pulled off a surprise result in Group C.
They're struggling in the league while Barnsley-based Barugh Green are challenging for the title. But cup fixtures can be a leveller, and Wigton Moor's stoppage time winner was deserved for the effort they put in throughout the match.
It was clear from the start that the visitors were the more talented side, but the hosts set out to make the contest as difficult for them as possible. The first half ended goalless, then Wigton Moor went in front six minutes after the break.
They didn't hold the lead for long though, and I expected Barugh Green would still ease to victory. But faultless defensive commitment, and some fine goalkeeping, kept the scores level until just beyond the 90th minute. And then it was Wigton Moor who struck the decisive goal.
Venues can be hard to discover and keep track off in this league, but Wigton Moor play at Temple Newsam Park in Leeds. It's a large park and a popular attraction. This game was played on a playing field on the edge of the park, known as Whitkirk Field.
