West Wales Premier League
Llangennech 2 Dafen Welfare 2 (att 224)
Having stayed overnight in Swansea, getting to Llangennech, near Llanelli, in time for a morning kick off was a lot easier than making the trek down from Manchester would have been.
The fixture was part of an official 'groundhop', organised by Groundhop UK and providing an opportunity to visit multiple games, and grounds, over the weekend.
Llangennech was the only venue on their itinerary that I'd not been to previously so the timing, allowing me a choice of games in the afternoon, was perfect. A coachload of groundhoppers, plus others who travelled independently, boosted the crowd and, hopefully, provided a financial bonus for the hosts.
We were treated to a very good game. The home side were ahead twice, but both times Dafen hit back to equalise. If anything the visitors looked the better side, despite being winless at the bottom of the league.
Three of the four goals were in the opening half. After the break Dafen's point was secured thanks a 64th minute goal. In stoppage a bad challenge, and a fracas that followed, resulted in two red cards for Llangennech, but they held out for a draw.
Llangennech Park, known colloquially as the 'Llan Siro', is used for football, rugby and cricket. The pitch is enclosed by a wooden fence, and there's an open bleacher-stand in between the dugouts.

National League Cup Expansion
ReplyDeleteI think that the English non-league trophy called the National League Cup should be expanded to include guest sides from the Scottish and Welsh leagues.
I do not support merging the Scottish Welsh, and English leagues. But I do support Pan-Great Britain Cups on top of domestic and European football.
The Scottish were allowed Irish, Welsh, and English sides in the Scottish Challenge Cup, so UEFA would be OK with this.
My idea would be to invite the first teams of all Welsh Cymru Premier sides, and the first teams of some lower tier Southern Scottish sides, and the B teams of Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, and Dundee United, as guest sides in the National League Cup.
This would be transformational for Welsh clubs in terms of attendances, finances and match quality. It would help them develop for UEFA football.
It would not be transformational for English and Scottish clubs but it would be fun.
The teams could be added with little increase in games for each club.
