May and Baker EC v Burnham Ramblers

3pm 9 November 2024

Eastern Counties League, Division One South
May and Baker Eastbrook Community 1 Burnham Ramblers 2 (att 17)

A prompt start and a short half time meant my first game was finished well before 2.45pm, so I even had time for a coffee before making my way to the main pitch at Parsloes Park.

The facility is home to both May and Baker, who I last at a nearby rugby ground in 2018, and Athletic Newham of the 'step five' Essex Senior League.

While a ground like this will never win over the traditionalists, it's not bad for a newly-built 3G. Spectators can access three sides, with just the far end out of reach, and have a choice of four small covered areas, two of them with seats.

Burnham had support among the small crowd, and they had reason to celebrate early on as their side took a fifth minute lead. May and Baker, higher in the league, tried to get back level but it was an opening half of few clear chances.

After the break the visitors again started well, doubling their lead to 2-0 just a couple of minutes after the restart.

Six minutes later the game began to swing more in the home side's favour. They pulled a goal back, soon after that a Burnham player picked up a second booking and was dismissed.

From then on it was mostly May and Baker attack against Burnham Ramblers defence. It seemed unlikely the away side would hold out, but somehow they did.

They even had to get through 10 minutes of additional time, although to be fair there were a lot of stoppages, many due to injuries, or claimed injuries, to visiting players.
