Wearside League, Division One
South Moor 2 FC Hartlepool 3 (att 100)
Whenever possible I like to see some sort of 'first' at the start of the competitive season. From the day's thin English fixture list I picked South Moor's first match in the top division of the Wearside League.
It ended in defeat, but I'm sure they'll take plenty of positives from an enjoyable match against a Hartlepool side who finished sixth last season.
The visitors were the better side, and they'd had chances before they opened the scoring from a corner after 28 minutes. Any hopes they had of coasting to a win were undone when a goalkeeping error gifted South Moor an equaliser just before half time.
It was no more than a temporary setback though, as Hartlepool regained their advantage early in the second period. South Moor thought they'd levelled again soon after, but although the referee initially gave the goal it was ruled out by a handball spotted by his assistant.
A third for the visitors was ultimately enough to win the points, but they had to endure a nervous final few minutes after South Moor pulled a late goal back to reduce the deficit.
South Moor is an area of Stanley in County Durham. The football club, which runs junior sides as well as an adult team, is part of an influx of clubs who have joined the Wearside League as the competition has expanded in recent years.
They play on a pitch next to the local primary school. The pitch is railed off, on the three sides that are accessible to spectators, and the rail looks old enough to pre-date South Moor having a senior side. I've no idea who might have played at the ground previously, although it's a former mining town so perhaps it was once part of a miners welfare sports ground?
