Arthurian League, Division One
Old Westminsters 3 Old Rugbeians 2 (att 3)
As I was in the south east for the weekend I took the opportunity to use public transport to visit a couple of grounds in the capital that'd be more challenging, and expensive, by car.
First up was a morning kick off in the second tier of the Arthurian League. Westminster School has its own sports ground in central London but, other than Arthur Dunn Cup ties, the old boys team makes do with hiring a 3G pitch in Rotherhithe.
It's not bad as 3G venues go, with a raised viewing area between the pitch and the Bacon's College Sports Centre building. Unfortunately it's behind the fence but there is some bench seating. High-rise London landmarks including The Shard and The Gherkin provide the backdrop.
The fixture was a bit of an end of season dead rubber. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, it was an enjoyable and entertaining 90 minutes.
Old Rugbeians, despite kicking off a man short (they were soon up to 11 players) took an early lead, and before long their advantage was 2-0. Old Westminsters had plenty of possession, but little threat in attack.
I overheard part of Rugbeians' half time team talk. Players were asked, rhetorically I think, how many times this season they'd let 2-0 leads slip. However many times it was, they proceeded to add another to the tally.
To be fair to the visitors, as the game wore on they tired in the heat without the benefit of substitutes. Old Westminsters, able to bring on fresh legs, also found the attacking incisiveness that had been lacking earlier. In the end they deserved their comeback for all three points.
