Horwich RMI FC v Ainsworth

6.30pm  27 May 2021

Lancashire Amateur League, Division 3B
Horwich RMI FC 0 Ainsworth 8 (att 12)

Horwich RMI used to be a major non-League club. In 1995 they moved to Leigh and became Leigh RMI, later morphing into Leigh Genesis before disappearing from senior football.

In Horwich meanwhile the name was kept alive by a new club, Horwich RMI AFC. A few years later Horwich RMI Juniors was formed to provide football for youngsters, and a pathway to the adult team.

At some point the senior club and the junior club fell out, and so the juniors went their own way as Horwich RMI FC. Eventually RMI FC had an open age side of its own and became, like RMI AFC, members of the Lancashire Amateur League.

If you're not confused by all that then you've probably not been reading it properly. I've no idea whether RMI AFC, RMI FC, or even Leigh Genesis (now back and in the Manchester League) lay any claim to the history of the original club. I do understand that RMI FC will have a new name from next season.

Visitors Ainsworth didn't have to worry about any of that. Their target, if my maths is correct, was a six goal win to keep them in with a chance of making the later stages of the league's post-lockdown mini-league competition.

They pretty much wrapped that up well inside the first half. They were determined from the off, and scored seven goals by half time against a Horwich side with nothing to play for.

The visitors eased off after the break, and RMI put up more of fight, restricting them to just one further goal.

This version of Horwich RMI play on a pitch at Green Lane Playing Fields. It's just a pitch, but the views of Winter Hill and Rivington Pike are good, particularly on a sunny evening.

  1. I visited the old Grundy Hill many times with Southport FC. Glad to see the Horwich RMI name still around even if its unsure who is the official RMI.
