Herts and Borders Churches League, Division One
ZimStevenage 2 Wymondley 3 (att 12)
I've watched a handful of matches in Christian leagues - providers of Sunday league style football for clubs who don't want to play on Sundays - but this was my debut in the Herts and Borders Churches League.
I started with a top division game between two sides who share the same home ground, a pleasant recreation ground in the village of Little Wymondley, between Stevenage and Hitchin. Changing rooms are in the corner of a sports field that has two pitches, and the nearer pitch was used for this game.
It's fair to say I had low expectations of the football, but I was pleasantly surprised. Twice Wymondley went ahead, but both times a dogged ZimStevenage came back to equalise. The home side were unfortunate to have late goal ruled out for offside, and with the match heading for a draw Wymondley seized on a chance to grab a late winner.
This match fitted in well with a weekend visiting family in Hertfordshire, but was enjoyable enough to tempt me back for more Saturday morning matches in the Herts and Borders Churches League.
