Hope Valley Amateur League, Division A
Railway (Whaley) 3 Youlgrave United 2 (att 12)
The Railway is a pub in Whaley Bridge but the football team play a few miles away in the small village of Peak Dale, whose own team disappeared from Hope Valley League football a few years ago.
From my temporary weekend base in New Mills this was a very easy, and very short, journey, so I was grateful the pitch had survived the Friday's heavy rain, unlike some in the local area, and the game was on.
A decent game it was too. Railway are only one place off the foot of the table, but turned in a battling performance to claim all three points.
They did it the hard way, coming from behind after a squandering a first half lead. A well-worked goal just before half time opened the scoring for Railway, but 10 minutes into the second half two goals in quick succession put the visitors in front.
I thought Railway might fold at that point, but they equalised almost immediately and, with momentum behind them, scored a decisive third goal before the end.
The Recreation Ground in Peak Dale is a typically basic Hope Valley League venue, but the main pitch is close to a modern pavilion housing the changing rooms, which also has some cover built on the front.
