Penrhiwceiber Constitutional Athletic v Llandrindod Wells

2.30pm  12 September 2015

Welsh Cup, Second Qualifying Round
Penrhiwceiber Constitutional Athletic 2 Llandrindod Wells 4 (att 25)

To me this looked one of the stand out ties of the round, with the potential for a cup upset as Mid Wales League leaders Llandrindod Wells visited a side playing three divisions lower.

That Llandrindod are in the south Wales section of the draw at all seems odd, but apparently they were the most southerly of the central Wales sides and so were shifted south to even out the numbers.

Their reward, in this round at least, was a trip to the Cynon Valley, to play a side in the middle division of the newly-formed South Wales Alliance. Favourites they may have been, and the better side they were, but it was still a battle before they booked their place in the next round.

Penrhiwceiber took a surprise early lead, and although Llandrindod soon levelled, it took a penalty save to stop the home side going back in front. Sloppy defending combined with clinical finished meant the visitors had the comfort of a 3-1 lead by half time.

In the second half a fourth goal put the outcome beyond doubt, although Penrhiwceiber pulled a goal back towards the end to keep things interesting.

Penrhiwceiber Constitutional Athletic, a mouthful of a name, play at Pentwyn Field, just up the road from the better-known Penrhiwceiber Rangers. There's a fulled railed off pitch next to the changing rooms and car park, but the club plays on another railed off pitch, with dugouts, a short uphill walk away. Beyond that is a third pitch, also railed off.
