Holme Rovers v Shiptonthorpe United

6pm  9 April 2015

East Riding County League, HE Dean Cup Second Round
Holme Rovers 3 Shiptonthorpe United 3,  4-2 on penalties (att 45)

I watched a game in this cup for the second Thursday evening in a row, and once again was well rewarded. This was a great cup tie in which second division Shiptonthorpe came so close to upsetting their premier division hosts.

Holme started well but failed to take their chances. The visitors grew into the game, and took a surprise lead after 34 minutes. Three minutes later another surprise as they scored a second.

The second half was great. Holme pushed forward trying to find a way back into the tie, while Shiptonthorpe tried to catch them on the break. Holme reduced the arrears to 1-2, but looked dead and buried when poor defending allowed Shiptonthorpe to score a third.

Holme refused to give up though, and dominated the game's closing stages. They scored after 78 and 85 minutes, and with no extra time it was straight to penalties. Holme's keeper was the hero, saving the visitors' first two spot kicks to help his side into the third round.

Holme Rovers are based on playing fields behind the village hall in Holme upon Spalding Moor. The club has changing rooms in the far corner, and there's some floodlights for training, but otherwise it's just a very pleasant park pitch.
