Isthmian League, Division One North
Brentwood Town 3 Aveley 1 (att 72)
Like policemen, and referees, all looking younger, one of things that makes you feel old is visiting what seems like a club's "new" ground, only to realise they've been playing there for over 20 years.
I went to Brentwood's former ground in 1989, and they started playing at The Arena in October 1993. To be honest it wasn't a venue that held much appeal, being on the edge of town and close to the roaring traffic of the A12, but having finally made the effort I was pleasantly surprised.
Having had a good few years to bed in, the ground lacks some of the blandness that often hampers new venues, although there's no escape the sound of passing traffic, A homely stand is to the front of a cosy clubhouse, and there's a covered hand-standing area behind the goal nearest the turnstiles.
Both these clubs have made good starts to the season, and went into this fixture in promotion play-off places. I expected a tight game, but Brentwood made a fantastic start and were 2-0 ahead well within the first 10 minutes.
Aveley pulled a goal back before half time, and there were chances at both ends after the break. Brentwood's keeper had to be on good form to stop the visitors equalising, and his efforts, and those of his team, were rewarded when a late third goal wrapped up the points for Brentwood,
