Northamptonshire Combination, Premier Division
Earls Barton United 2 Moulton 1 (att 28)
The Northants Combination is not a league I'm very familiar with. My only previous game in the competition was about four years ago at Queen Eleanor Great Houghton, a club who have since disappeared
But it has "step seven" status from the Football Association, and some interesting-looking town and village clubs, so it'll certainly be on my radar for future visits.
In truth this game wasn't the greatest advert for the league. A rather scrappy encounter effectively won thanks to two first half goals for the home side. Moulton's pulled a goal back with virtually the game's final kick.
Earls Barton's ground, The Grange, is pleasant and typical of many town and village sports ground set ups at this level, with a cricket square next to the football pitch, and a pavilion housing a bar as well as changing rooms. The pitch was railed along the side, and at part of each end. I assume the railings are removed when cricketers take over the ground each summer.
