Farnworth Town v Horwich RMI

6.30pm  4 September 2013

Lancashire Amateur League, 1st XI Cup, First Round
Farnworth Town 2 Horwich RMI 2, 4-2 on penalties (att 30)

This game took a while to get going, but once it did it turned out to be a great game, with a thrilling finish and a surprise result.

Horwich, a division higher than Farnworth, scored a goal in each half and looked to be heading comfortably into the next round of the league cup. But, like Orford the previous night, once Farnworth pulled a goal back they got on top and before along a penalty levelled the score.

They might have won in in 90 minutes had an eagle-eyed referee not spotted a push in the penalty area moments before Farnworth thought they'd netted a third.

With late fading the game went straight to penalties, Farnworth scored all their first four, whereas Horwich had two saved. The referee almost ruined a good performance by initially awarding the tie to Farnworth before they'd taken their all important fourth penalty.

Farnworth's ground, at Harper Green Playing Fields in the Farnworth area of Bolton, isn't bad for this level. The pitch is surrounded by the remains of a former athletics track, and there's a small section of open stepped terracing, leading down towards the pitch from where the changing rooms once stood. These days players change in an adjacent school.
