Ness United 2 Delting 0 (att 15)
This was without doubt the coldest I've ever been while watching a football match in July. That was thanks to a very strong wind blowing in from the north, and straight across the Boddam Sports Field pitch.
It could have been worse though. After a brief period of bright sunshine, fog descended on Shetland by late afternoon. Driving from Lerwick I had my doubts whether the game would be on, but thankfully the venue was misty rather than foggy.
Given the conditions, which made playing as well as watching a challenge, it was difficult to judge the standard of my first experience of Shetland football.
The teams worked hard, but clear chances were few and far between. Ness looked the better team though, scoring after three minutes, and adding a second close to the end. In between they struck the frame of the goal and were denied by the Delting keeper.
The visitors though they'd scored with about 12 minutes to go, but they'd fouled the Ness keeper when bundling the ball over the line.
The pitch at Boddam, to the south of Shetland's Mainland, is a basic village playing field, although there is some cover, and some park bench seating, in front of the pavilion.
