Bransty Rangers v Mirehouse

11am  11 February 2012
Cumberland County League, Whitehaven Cup, First Round
Bransty Rangers 5 Mirehouse 4 aet (att 10)

A rare chance to see two games in a day in the Cumberland County League, thanks to this cup tie being brought forward to a morning kick off so those involved could watch the Manchester United v Liverpool game.

But the players' hopes of seeing most of the action from Old Trafford were dashed by an 88th minute Bransty equaliser, levelling the scores at 3-3 and treating the small crowd to 30 minutes extra time.

I doubt the lunchtime Premier League game would have provided as much entertainment as this anyway. Division One Bransty shocked their Premier Division visitors by taking a first half lead. A nasty tackle earned the Mirehouse skipper a straight red card after 35 minutes, and soon after that Bransty doubled their advantage.

The Mirehouse half time team talk had the desired effect though, and they made light of being a man short to race into a 3-2 lead before we were half way through the second period. Then came Bransty's dramatic equaliser and extra time.

The sides scored a goal apiece in the first period of extra time, but Bransty edged the second period and scored the winner, shortly after being reduced to 10 men themselves after a harsh red card.

What the game lacked in quality, and in truth it was lacking in quality, it more than made up for in entertainment.

Bransty is on the outskirts on Whitehaven, and the exposed pitch is high up with great views of the town centre and harbour. The pitch was small, and had an awful surface, which hampered Mirehouse more than the home team. One touchline was taped off, and there's grass banking on the far side. West Cumbria may have been one of the few areas of England to escape the frost, but it was still a very cold morning.
