Whittington v Bradwell

3 September 2011 (2pm)
Staffordshire County Senior League, Division Two
Whittington 1 Bradwell 3 (att 9)

Judging from the league table I expected an easy win for the visitors, and that was reinforced when they went ahead in the first minute after some comical defending.

I saw Bradwell score nine against hapless Tunstall Town recently, but they never looked like repeating such goalscoring feats today, and Whittington proved stubborn opponents. Although they were always second best, the home side managed an equaliser, before falling behind again before half time. Bradwell added a third goal late in the game.

To be fair the both sides, it can't have been easy playing  on a surface that was rock hard and had little grass. It looked as if this area of Staffordshire, just outside Lichfield, hadn't had any rain for months.

Whittington, new to the league this year, are based at Whittington Barracks. The entrance the ground is next to a military museum ... not often you have to pass a tank before turning into a ground.

The pitch wasn't roped off, something I thought was a league requirement, and is some distance from the pavilion where players changed and which would provide a sheltered, if distant, view of the action in bad weather.

From reading notices pinned on the walls inside the bar area of the pavilion, I think the venue doubles as Tamworth FC's training ground.
