Isthmian League, North Division
Cambridge City 3 Takeley 1 (att 882)
Finding new grounds to visit over Christmas is a challenge, especially when combined with other commitments. I got lucky that Cambridge City had a home fixture on a day when it meant just the slightest of detours on a journey I'd be making anyway.
This is only City's second second season at their new ground, named after sponsors FWD-IP and located outside Cambridge in the village of Sawston. For a newly-built non-league stadium it is impressive, and already looks suitable should the club climb the leagues.
Cambridge city certainly have potential. Festive fixtures often produce higher than usual attendances but close to 900, against a side who brought few fans with them, shows they don't lack support.
The ground's main feature is a large seated stand. It's still a work in progress, with portable buildings providing facilities that will, I assume, eventually be housed within it, but it looks good.
There are covered standing areas at both ends and along the far side opposite the stand. There are many worse grounds higher up the non-league pyramid.
To make the most of the new stadium, and to keep supporters travelling to it from Cambridge, the club needs promotion. They're currently mid-table but recent good form means they're moving in the right direction.
A hard-earned but deserved three points against a Takeley side battling to avoid relegation keeps them close to the play-off places.
A solitary first half goal put the home side in front 10 minutes before half time. Takeley were better after the break and threatened a goal before a penalty gave City a great chance to extend their lead.
But the spot kick was meekly struck and comfortably saved, and soon after Takeley did score to make it 1-1. That sparked extra life into the home side, who quickly regained their advantage. Late on another penalty, this one scored, made it 3-1.
