St Piran League, Premier Division East
Gunnislake 6 North Petherwin 2 (att 45)
After being part of Truro City's capacity crowd against Torquay on Good Friday it was back to more familiar fare on Saturday.
Having stayed overnight in Truro it was an easy journey to Gunnislake, which was my only unvisited venue staging a game in either of the regionalised premier divisions of Cornwall's St Piran League.
Gunnislake don't play in the village itself but just outside nearby Albaston. It's a pleasant ground that's fairly typical for this level of football in the south-west, with an enclosed and sloping pitch, dugouts and advertising boards.
The changing rooms are a short walk from the playing area, among buildings that include a snack bar serving hot food and drinks.
The home side needed a win in a battle against possible relegation, and got it surprisingly comfortably against a North Petherwin team with little to play for.
Two goals in the first few minutes set Gunnislake up for a successful afternoon. The visitors got a goal back shortly before half time, but it was temporary respite as after the break the hosts extended their lead to 5-1.
North Petherwin then reduced the arrears, but Gunnislake added a sixth before the end. The win lifts them out of the bottom two, and potentially just one more win from safety.
Hi Steve. Thanks for visiting our venue on Saturday. Thanks for the kind words and report. Everything is a working progress at Butts Meadow. We have only been here for 5 years and previously we had the king George 5th playing fields in the village itself. Unfortunately with contaminated soil and constant flooding on our old pitch. We were no longer prepared to continue down there as any improvement works wouldn’t be beneficial to us. Since our move to Butts Meadow we had gained 3 promotions in 3 years. Two years ago, Our whole first team along with the management team left to play and manage in the SWPL for local side Callington. This left us extremely short on players.
ReplyDeleteEverything within the club is a working progress. The pitch is being improved year after year. The changing facilities are slowly getting there. If you wanted to visit again just pop us a message. Thanks again 💙
