Stockwood Wanderers v Watchet Town

2pm 22 February 2025

Somerset County League, Premier Division
Stockwood Wanderers 1 Watchet Town 3 (att 35)

Having stayed overnight in Worcester I was planning to head deeper into the South West, but a slew of Friday evening postponements in the Exeter area forced a rethink.

Bristol offered several options including, importantly for me, a couple of back-up fixtures on artificial pitches. It was also a good place for my other half to spend an afternoon while I was at a game.

Luckily my target match was on so, via a city centre drop off, I arrived at the Blueprint Stadium in Stockwood Lane. Stockwood Wanderers completed a full set of the three adjoining grounds, having been to neighbouring Bristol Telephones in 2018 and Cutters Friday pre-blog in 2007.

The game was slow to get going, although we almost had a remarkable goal in the opening moments, when a Stockwood shot from distance came back off the post. That was as close as either side came to scoring in the opening half.

The deadlock was broken by a well-worked home goal about midway through the second period. Stockwood had looked the better side, but their lead lasted barely five minutes before a penalty allowed Watchet to level.

That goal sparked the visitors into life. Just a couple of minutes later they scored again to go in front, and then added a third to confirm what had looked an improbable win.

Stockwood Wanderers' ground is good for a county league team, and has scope if the club look to climb the pyramid. The pitch is enclosed by a sturdy barrier, and there's hard standing on the clubhouse side and at both ends. Dugouts are on the far side.
