CD Aves v Gil Vicente

8.30pm  8 November 2019

Portugal, Primeria Liga
CD Aves 1 Gil Vicente 2 (att 1,281)

First match of football-centred long weekend in Porto. The northern Portuguese city is rightfully popular with tourists, but groundhoppers are also well-catered for with plenty of clubs within easy reach.

Vila das Aves is north west of Porto, and very quiet on a Friday night despite the prospect of a fixture in the top flight of Portuguese football.

It was perhaps understandable though, as Aves went into this game bottom of the league. Things got no better for them after another defeat, but the home side were unlucky not to get a draw for their efforts.

The opening 35 minutes or so were tepid, but the match came to life with a Gil Vicente goal against the run of play. They added a second nine minutes later, which was a the cue for vociferous home supporters to hurl abuse at Aves players.

The restless fans were placated a little by a home goal just before half time, but that was the end of the scoring. Despite the lack of goals the second period was entertaining, with Aves having more of the ball but Gil Vicente dangerous on the break.

Clube Desportivo Aves play in a horseshoe-shaped all-seater stadium. The main stand has a roof but the rest is open. About 100 happy Gil Vicente fans gathered on the far side.
