Coed Eva Athletic v Newport Saints

11am  24 August 2019

Gwent Premier League, Division One
Coed Eva Athletic 4 Newport Saints 3 (att 227)

A seven-goal thriller provided a good start to this year's Gwent League hop. It may have been the opening fixture of the hop for me, but not for those who had been to the Friday night game that officially got proceedings under way.

For once my early start from Manchester was followed by a trouble-free bank holiday journey to South Wales, and I arrived at Coed Eva's pitch in Cwmbran with time to spare.

That said, parking places on surrounding roads were already at a premium, and the bloke whose house I left my car in front of was curious as to why so many people had turned up on a Saturday morning.

Those that did were rewarded with a game that was great from the start. Newport Saints were ahead very early, but Coed Eva soon levelled and then the visitors went back in front. The home side got back level for a second time before half time.

The action continued after the break as Newport Saints went ahead for a third time, but two goals in quick succession gave Coed Eva all three points.

Like most grounds in this league - newly-renamed the Gwent Premier League - Coed Eva's is fairly basic. It's a railed off pitch with dugouts but little else, although an extra effort had been made to accommodate the larger than usual hop crowd.
