Royal Wootton Bassett Town v Lydney Town

7.45pm  2 December 2015

Hellenic League, Floodlit Cup, Third Round
Royal Wootton Bassett Town 1 Lydney Town 2 (att 70)

I'm not a huge fan of floodlit cups, given they're usually run just to provide some extra football for clubs who choose to enter, but this tie fitted in well with my journey back north, and also gave me a welcome chance to recomplete the Hellenic League.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town moved into their new home at the start of the season. It's a great facility for the town, even if the pitchside facilities are predictably dull for the groundhopper. There's just a prefab seated stand on one side, and a small covered standing area opposite.

However, it's perfectly adequate for the level of football, offers plenty of room for expansion should the need arise, and has an excellent clubhouse. It's also worth praising the programme editor who, on the evidence of the issue for this game, does a first class job.

On the pitch it was no thriller. Lydney had the better of the first half, without looking likely to score, and they managed to concede against the run of play in stoppage time. The visitors overturned the deficit in the second half, deservedly so, and managed to survive a few late scares after losing a player to a red card with five minutes left.
