1.45pm 28 December 2024 Suffolk and Ipswich League, Senior Division Halesworth Town 4 Debenham LC 1 (att 100) A relaxing couple of post-Christmas nights away on the Suffolk coast put fixtures that would normally by very awkward to get to from home within easier reach. I took the opportunity to visit Halesworth Town, partly because they have a chance of finishing as champions, although even with games in hand it'll be a challenge to overtake leaders Old Newton United, but also because the club has ambitions for promotion to 'step six'. Their ground can't be far of being ready for the step up, especially as these days rules around seats and floodlights are more relaxed, with clubs having a sensible grace period to put everything in place. The pitch is already enclosed and has dugouts, and there's hard standing behind the near goal and along one touchline. 2pm 21 December 2024 Northern Alliance, Premier Division Newcastle East End 2 AFC Burradon and New Fordley 3 (att 28) I'd been undecided where to go for a Saturday afternoon game, but my mind was made up with news that Stobswood Welfare's home fixture had been postponed. That left this game as the only new ground in the Northern Alliance top division, and with the relative safety of an artificial pitch. But when I arrived the referee was concluding a 'pitch' inspection due to concerns about the strength of the wind. Thankfully the match went ahead. The conditions were undoubtedly a significant factor, but I've seen games in much worse weather. And at least it stayed mostly dry. AFC Burradon and New Fordley are unbeaten league leaders. 10.30am 21 December 2024 North East Christian Fellowship League, Andy Walker Trophy, Quarter Final Sunderland Samba 3 Bill Quay Community Church 0 (att 10) Having decided to stay overnight in the north-east after Friday's game at Newbiggin I thought I might struggle for a Saturday morning game, as most minor leagues had began a festive break. But luckily there was a single tie in one of the North East Christian Fellowship League's cup competitions. I wasn't sure if it'd also be a goundhopping 'tick'. Sunderland Samba play most games on a school pitch, but as I assume that was unavailable this match was at the Ford Quarry Hub in South Hylton. I'd previously visited in 2015, for a Sunderland West End game and before the site was transformed into a hub with a trio of 3G pitches. 7.30pm 20 December 2024 Northern Alliance, Premier Division AFC Newbiggin 5 Cramlington United 4 (att 85) I occasionally question my sanity when groundhoppiing. Driving to Northumberland, and then standing in a freezing cold wind waiting for a Northern Alliance game to begin was one of those occasions. But I have a warm winter coat, I was staying in a hotel just a short drive away, and I was about to witness the most remarkable 90 minutes I've seen in a long time. I don't keep detailed enough records to know if I've ever previously seen a team come back from being 4-0 down to win, but I definitely have now. Newbiggin's defensive frailities were exposed early on by Cramlington, who scored three times in the opening 15 minutes. They'd added a fourth by the half-hour. If the home side had any consolation it was that the fourth goal came after they'd had a decent spell, and that they'd be playing with the wind more behind them in the second half. 2pm 15 December 2024 Ardal League, South East Canton 0 Caldicot Town 2 (att 80) Fixtures on Sundays used to be common in South Wales, especially in the old Welsh League, but these days they're a rarity. Canton have been bucking the trend in recent weeks, with a series of home games on Sundays. I'm unsure why the matches have been switched from Saturdays, but it's a bonus from a groundhopping perspective. They're based at the Cardiff International Sports Campus, literally across the road from the Cardiff City stadium. The main feature is an athletics stadium, where I watched a game in 2013 , but there are several other pitches, including the one used by Canton. Club signage suggests it's their regular home. It's listed as the SIS pitch, which apparently means it's some sort hybrid between grass and artificial. To my untrained eye it looked like regular grass. 2pm 14 December 2024 Ardal League, South West Clydach 1 Ynyshir Albions 1 (att 60) Clydach is a village just north of Swansea, and its football team has made rapid progress in recent years, climbing from the Neath League up to the third tier of the Welsh pyramid. Their first season at that level, in the Ardal League South West, is likely to be one of consolidation, and so a point against higher-placed Ynyshir is will probably go down as a decent result. But Clydach will have been frustrated as this was a game they could have won. They scored early and, despite coming under plenty of pressure, maintained a slender lead into half time. Ynyshir equalised just a minute or so after the break. But five minutes after that they were down to 10 men, a player receiving two yellow cards just seconds apart. 2pm 7 December 2024 Humber Premier League Sculcoates Amateurs 5 Hornsea Town 0 (att 20) The BBC's weather app suggested that conditions in Hull would be better than those earlier in the day in Sheffield. It was wrong. There were only brief respites from the torrential rain, during which it reverted to being just wet. And the winds increased as the game went on, making both playing and spectating a challenge. Despite all that I'd rather spend my Saturday afternoon being battered by a storm watching a match than stuck at home. And credit to players and coaches on both sides for getting on with it. Hornsea may be wishing the fixture hadn't taken place though. They had the wind behind them in the first half, but failed to make the most of it and a free kick gave Sculcoates a one goal lead at half time. 10.30am 7 December 2024 Sheffield and District Fair Play League, Division One Crookes Crusaders 1 Brunsmeer Athletic 2 (att 3) Attempting to watch two games despite Storm Darragh might have been foolhardy, but weather forecasts suggested heading east of the Pennines was a good bet, and such conditions are when 3G pitches come into their own. Although it was wet and windy, Sheffield hadn't got the worst of the storm by the time of this morning kick off, played at Hillsborough College. As 3G venues go it's a decent one. The main spectator area, running the full length of one side, is spacious and not hemmed in by the usual high fence. There's also easy access behind the goal nearest the college-sum-sports centre. The top division of Sheffield's Saturday morning league is usually a good standard, and this was no different.
